Top 5 Distractions For Students And How To Overcome Them

This may be a very familiar topic especially among teens. I am pretty sure that every single student face this problem of needing to deal with distraction when it comes to studying. Personally, I as a college student find it very difficult to stay away from my phone and also music. In this post, I will be sharing the top 5 distractions for students and how to overcome them.

Problem #1 : Surfing the Internet

I am listing this as the first distraction because the internet can be used for various purposes from completing assignments to connecting with family and friends. The issue is, WiFi is available everywhere nowadays which causes us to be drifted away from what we actually want to use the internet for which is for finding references for study purposes but end up watching videos on Youtube instead. Once we start watching a video on Youtube, we won’t stop with one but we will go on with more and more as the content of the suggested videos get more and more interesting.

How to overcome:

The best thing to do to overcome this distraction is by disconnecting from the internet when you are starting to do your work. Make sure to find for all the necessary notes and details and save them offline before starting your assignment or work. This way, you can keep your distraction level to minimum.


Problem #2 : Social Media


Social media has become an extremely important part of our daily life. It is definitely not easy for one to stay away from social media for good but that’s not what you should be doing. Social media is a wonderful platform for us to connect with the people we love. We are able to message our friends and family whenever we need to and also share pictures and videos as well. If the usage of social media is kept for really important needs only, this will not be considered as a distraction. The biggest mistake we are doing is trying to upload everything we do from dusk till dawn, from having breakfast to going to bed. This is totally unnecessary in my opinion, a waste of time.


How to overcome:

Therefore, what we have to do is to keep our posts to a minimum level as this will keep our minds off of thinking what to post next throughout the day. Just post those fun pictures and videos once in a while and stay connected with friends and spend a minimum of 1 hour and maximum of 2 hours only per day on checking your social medias. As the days go by, try to gradually reduce it to an even lesser allocation of time. As for using apps like Whatsapp, keep it to a limited time in using it as you can get easily carried away when chatting with friends.


Problem #3 : Music


I am pretty sure most of us here are guilty of being distracted by music. The most common excuse I use to listen to music is it helps me get through my assignments and work faster and I feel more energetic doing my job. We may feel that this is absolutely true but the type of music we are listening to are those pop songs by Taylor Swift and super catchy songs like Happier and Perfect. Although these songs can make us feel good and get us into a good mood, it can mess up with what we are doing. For example, if we are typing out an assignment, the possibility for us to make silly mistakes such as with spelling and simple grammar errors is high.


How to overcome:

To avoid this distraction, we should listen to music which does not have any lyrics and consists alpha waves. Alpha waves can help us to stay focused when studying. There are plenty of options you can choose from in Youtube. Here is one I use on a daily basis.

Problem #4 : Movies and TV Shows


I personally love watching movies and tv shows. The biggest mistake we do when watching a tv show is to binge watch it. When we start binge watching a show, we will end up wanting to finish the series we are watching as soon as we can. Studies show that a person spends less than a week to finish watching one whole season of a series on Netflix. Imagine the amount of time we spend on watching tv shows. It is not wrong to watch movies and tv shows and movies to relax at the end of a tiring day but do it the right way.


How to overcome:

If you are watching a movie, make sure that you get enough sleep for the next day or else you will end up being a zombie the next day. When watching a tv show, keep it to one episode a day. Problem #5 : Relationships


It doesn’t matter if it’s your chatty roommate or your best friend, when people are around as you’re working, it can be tough to ignore them. Your significant other might want your attention. Your friend might want to goof around rather than study for a test. Before you know it, instead of going over test preps, you’re laughing about a good story or the latest embarrassing moment suffered by one of your friends. This can be bad for both you and those around you as it is a big distraction for both.


How to overcome:

Study alone or with studious friends. Tell everyone else you’ll hang out later, when your work is done. Make sure to set your priorities right as you only have one chance to excel in your studies and become a successful person in the future.
