Students nowadays are facing a problem of not being able to relax and unwind from their busy lifestyle. This does not apply only for students but for adults as well as they are very busy with chasing after their career. Although we are in the 21st century with modern technology, we must also learn to take some time off. The point is, we must take some time off for self care. Self care makes you more energetic and mentally present. There are actually various ways to do this but I will be sharing 10 important ones that have been particularly very useful for me.
1. Go for a walk
Taking a walk does not necessarily have to be walking at a park or at the beach. If you are unable to find a park (because there isn’t one at your neighbourhood), you can always do it by walking up and down the staircase. Besides that, if the grocery store is only 5 – 10 minutes away, try to walk there instead of taking the car as it can help you to relax as you get to enjoy the fresh air while taking a stroll to the grocery store.
2. Put on some music and dance
For this step, you need not worry of not being a good dancer because you are free to do whatever you want. Just play some upbeat music loudly and dance our heart out. Don’t hesitate to pull off some steps that you’ve always wanted to try after watching those Korean music videos. Enjoy yourself to the maximum. If you want some guided dancing to your favourite song, then you can always search for Zumba videos on Youtube like this one.
3. Take a warm bath or shower
Taking a warm bath or shower makes the body and the mind more relaxed. For this reason, a hot shower can reduce and even remove stress. The hot water actually improves oxytocin level, and this in turn improves your mood and lowers stress levels. Besides that, a hot shower can help to relieve sore muscles, muscle tension and knots. It can also improve blood circulation in our body.
4. Do some breathing exercises
Breathing exercises are one of the best ways to relax your mind, body and soul. Some examples of breathing exercises are the pursed lip breathing, coordinated breathing, deep breathing, huff cough and diaphragmatic breathing. You can get more information on these breathing exercises here.
5. Unplug from all electronics for an hour
This step may be particularly difficult for teenagers to follow as we are practically glued to our phones and laptops. That is not an excuse to not follow this because there are plenty of other things to do such as catching up with the news (reading newspapers), reading a good book or even do some yoga. This can definitely help us relax.
6. Watch videos that make you laugh
Having a good laugh has been scientifically proven to improve our mood and help us to take things off our mind. Nowadays, there are many videos on Youtube which helps us to laugh out loud and to make our day better. There are many types of funny videos on Youtube such as funny animal videos, prank videos and also baby videos. You can even try one of those try not to laugh challenges if you are up for it.
7. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure
This can surely help you relax because manis and pedis are kind of a hobby for a lot of us. Picking those nail polish colours and the decors to use after that is something fun to do as well. It is a fun hobby to engage in as we can even get our own mani and pedi set to do it by ourselves at home. This is also a step of self care which will make us feel good about ourselves.
8. Treat yourself to some dessert
This may seem like a nightmare-ish option but hear me out first! Desserts can be anything sweet that makes us feel good. It doesn’t have to be taken always as we need to take care of our health too. Too much sweet is never a good option for a healthy lifestyle. If you are trying to lose some pounds and currently on a diet, take some dessert during your cheat day and pop in some chocolates in between too. It can give you energy and make you feel better too. Personally, this has been a wonderful way for me to relax!
9. Try something new
It can be anything. It can be a sport, a new language or a new hobby. Take up activities that are completely new to you so that you will be completely engaged with it and your full focus is on it. If you love reading books, go ahead and start reading some good books and make book reports so that u can keep track of the books you are reading. If you love to write, you can start you own blog page and engage yourself there. It can definitely help you to improve your language and writing. Since Tris and I were on term break, we decided to take up blogging as a hobby and it has been a great way for us to unwind from our busy lifestyle!
10. Burn a scented candle and listen to some music
The scented candles can surely help you relax with its soothing aroma. Aroma oil with diffusers can work too. The main objective is for you to feel much more relaxed after smelling it. Listen to some melodious songs or songs of any genre as you wish. If you don’t want to listen to music, you can always read a good book. The aroma from the scented candle can help you to concentrate and engage in the book you are reading completely. It is actually my most favourite way to unwind after a very tiring day.
